Breast Cancer and Mental Health

Breast cancer is popularly known for the physical hardships it brings. But that’s not all. The other aspect, an uncommon one, is the impact it has on breast cancer patients and survivors’ mental health.

There is a list of mental illnesses associated with the diagnosis and treatment phase of breast cancer. Most of the victims are left depressed, anxious, and with a mentality of feeling alone for the rest of their life.

Every October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month spreads awareness of breast cancer prevention and recognizes the women affected by this deadly disease every year. The numerous survivors have raised their voices to speak about the mental struggle they faced.

Let’s discuss how breast cancer affects your mental health.

Breast Cancer Leads to Deteriorating Mental Health

Depression is one of the most common mental illnesses that sucks your energy and the remaining hope to live when diagnosed with breast cancer. The journey starts from being anxious about the remaining lifespan, treatment, bills, budget to falling into the bottomless pits of depression where surviving chances seem bleak.

All these mixed, intense emotions can cause long-term mental health issues. Many scientific studies show that most women show signs of PTSD that last longer than a year. Even after successfully fighting against breast cancer, the fear of its recurrence engraved in the survivor’s mind forever degrades the quality of life due to its severity.

Breast Cancer Shatters Positive Body Image

Most commonly, after diagnosis and surgeries, the women fighting against this deadly disease feel different about their bodies. Intense feelings of being ugly, physical changes in the body, etc., make the victim or survivor never want to see themselves in the mirror again.

Mastectomies severely impact the overall outlook of the survivor’s body. It also negatively impacts their relationships, libido, and overall mental health.

Breast Cancer Degrades Physical Health

Mental illness doesn’t only weaken the mind; it harms the body and mortality factor too. If a patient has pre-existing mental health conditions, the rate of surviving a breast cancer diagnosis lowers significantly.

The trauma that breast cancer causes increases the risk of lasting chronic pain even after the treatment. These mental illnesses can suck up the energy, will, and hope to perform the necessary daily tasks like eating healthy foods, exercising, connecting with friends and family, and take medicine on time.

How to tackle this? Support therapy can help even after years of treatment.
